The DRC launched a month-long election campaign on November 19, 2023 with 23 candidates running for president amid a tense political climate and relentless fighting in the east of the country. Around 44 million registered voters, out of a population of almost 100 million, were set to elect a president on December 20.

Felix Tshisekedi was re-elected as DR Congo’s president in polls that were marred with controversies and fraud, the activist says. Out of a population of almost 100 million, 44 million people were eligible to cast their votes in elections that took place on December 20. Kambale Musavuli from the Centre for Research on the Congo-Kinshasa talks about the various issues that emerged during the voting and what this verdict means for the country as well as the region.
